FTM needs the down and dirty answered

Okay so after researching a lot about cloth vs disposables we’ve decided to do cloth. We’re looking at lil helper which are the kind with snap inserts. I’ve watched lots of videos on how they work but now I need the stuff that for obvious reasons you can’t video. I’m sorry if these questions are dumb but the only experience I have is babysitting with disposables.

1. If I’m holding my baby and it pees or poos, will I feel it, or will it leak through onto me? Aka, are they waterproof like a disposable?

2. Could someone please walk me through the process of changing a dirty cloth diaper, I mean the gross stuff, where is the poo, what do you do with it etc

3. If I wash my inserts and shells every three days where do I store them? Do I rinse before placing them in a lidded container? Do they smell?

I am planning on breastfeeding but answers that include for breastfed and formula and food are all welcome! Just trying to get an idea of what we’re in for! Thanks :)

1. You will definitely not feel it. They are waterproof. 2. You change it just like a regular diaper. If baby is not EBF you will need to rinse the diaper. (A diaper sprayer works well.) otherwise, just put it with the other diapers. 3. I just have a hanging wet bag in his bedroom where I put the dirty diapers until I’m ready to wash them. We wash every other day or everyday.

Agree totally! I bought a trashcan with a push foot thing though for dirty diapers. We bought a pack of 2 wet dry liners on Amazon that fit perfectly. We just wanted to avoid any stink.

I second all of this. I use Lil Helpers myself and I am happy with them. They are a good investment since you can use them from birth (or soon after) until potty training.

They are waterproof, that being said if they get super saturated they will leak likely around legsYou don’t have to spray the poop off until they are eat solids. You do have to wash them twice. Once on a quick warm cycle and then again on hot for the longest cycle your machine will do. You change like a regular diaper and just toss in a diaper pail. If they are pocket diapers I unstuff them before putting them in the pail. If you get a good diaper pail they won’t smell unless you open the pail. Washing every 3 days is perfect

If you take clothes to the laundromat they will wash it all on hot too regardless of what your clothing says you should do. I mean it’s not going to destroy your diapers, they just won’t last as long.

To bleach from time to time due to yeast. Hot water gets them clean. This is what my diaper service recommends and they do this for a living

1. You won’t feel it. They are usually bulkier than disposables and I can rarely even smell it when he poops. If there is leaking, they probably don’t fit right or the diaper is defective. The outside should be waterproof. 2. I use pocket diapers so if it’s pee, I unsnap it, put a new one on him, and pull the insert out before throwing the insert and diaper into my wet bag. If it’s poop, I wipe him with cloth wipes and then bring all soiled stuff down and spray it off in the toilet before tossing it all in the wet bag I have in the bathroom. It doesn’t need done immediately but I like getting it over with. If you EBF, nothing needs sprayed and all can go right into a wet bag and then into the wash.

3. I have a wet bag for pee diapers hanging on the changing table and another for the poo ones I spray in the bathroom. I was the diapers and bags at the same time every 2-3 days. I bulk with his clothes so I pretty much wash when his little hamper is full. When clean, I have them in storage cubes on the changing table. I stuff my pocket diapers when I take them out of the dryer so they’re ready at change time. The picture is from before I had him and we have double that amount now. I’ve always heard to store them where air can get to them because you don’t want the elastics to dry out. I don’t know how people feel about when they’re in daily use, though.

I basically agree with everything already said, though I EBF and still spray off in the toilet before going in the pail. Sure, it will come off in the wash, but I feel weird about putting unnecessary ickies in my washing machine. Once solids are introduced, the poo basically rolls off into the toilet.
