Bumper pads?

My son is just turned 5 months old & is moving around constantly for some time now. He does the army crawl & rolls everywhere, he doesn’t stop lol. We’ve recently run into a problem where now he is moving a lot in his sleep & literally goes from one end of the crib to the other but he is constantly banging his head on the crib & waking himself up (which is unusual because he’s slept 10-11h a night since 1.5 m/o). 
My question is, what are your takes on bumper pads. I’ve read so many different opinions from yes use them, to no they are suffocation hazards. I’m torn, I wanna protect his head but I don’t want to put him in danger with them either.

We got mesh ones. My guys legs were covered in bruises even through a sleep sack! Our ped actually recommended it.

There are far worse things that can happen with bumper pads in a crib than without them in. Id rather have baby get a bump than get tangled up or suffocate.

I feel like the AAP took into account the fact that kids bump up against their crib rails when they weighed the pros and cons of bumper pads.
So they must've felt the risks to bumper pads (potential death) outweighed the benefits (no bumps/bruises) to create their recommendations against bumper pads. 
But I'm not going to shame you if you chose to use them.

we found mesh crib bumpers, and I'm glad we did. my little bit loves to sleep right up against the edges of his crib, but I haven't had any worries our problems because I know he can breathe. they are also pretty padded so he hasn't had any bruises or anything from Bumping his his head when he moves around. all in all I would say they were totally worth it.

They’re not safe. 
My daughter went through a period when she first became mobile that she would get her arm or leg stuck. I considered the bumpers too but decided getting and arm or leg stuck or a little bump on the head isn’t worth the risk of being suffocated. Your son likely will grow out of this little phase, most babies do! 
But in the end it is your decision what you think is best. Just weigh the pros and cons

According to AAP, even the mesh ones are not safe. “Breathability” is a marketing term and there’s no way to test a product’s breathability for safety. Any additions to a crib other that a waterproof cover and crib sheet are not approved, including bumpers, mobiles, nests, wedges, etc.

We didn’t, I’d just let him learn instead. Obviously he wasn’t bashing his head on the edges, just bumping, babies need to learn.

I had to use them with my son. He got so active that his leg would get stuck between the slates of his crib. Breathable guards helped tremendously.
