What would you do if your child (age 7-10) purposely harmed you?

If your child were 7-10 years old and had a history of purposely harming other household members/yourself, what would you do?

It depends are they upset and slapping, hitting, pinching etc in fits of being angry  or are they being malicious and hurting people for pleasure? Huge difference there

A close friend recently went through this, her child purposefully harmed family members repeatedly. She didn’t take them to a therapist until she overheard him talking to himself during a bath. He was talking to himself saying how he would kill each family member. Definitely do not wait. I’m not saying it’s the same situation, but it’s definitely a reason to worry.

Well it depends on what type of harming. Bd more specific. If he slapped me or threw a toy at me he would be taken some time out combined with loss of privileges as in no tv no playing with certain toys stuff like that. I wouldn't take him to therapy as long as it's not too harmful. Burning the house down stuff like that needs therapy because that's extreme. But throwing tantrum and giving mom attitude every kid does it and you just need to talk to them and stuff like that.

Depends on the type of harm and severity. I don’t think I would call the police because I think it’s a reaction to an open wound, and the police may further that loss of trust. However, if you feel like you are actually in danger then discuss the next steps with your therapist - such as perhaps staying somewhere else for a while, receiving more intensive therapy.

I would put him or her in some therapy class to see why they are acting out like that. Hitting doesn't do anything but make them do it more.  I would also take there things away and when they behave then can get something back. I won't tolerate bad behavior

Has he been watching violence on tv? Dont know if that would have anything to do with it or not. I'd probably do more than one thing in an effort to get on top of the situation.

therapy and go from there on how to handle it at home according to what the therapists finds and suggests. purposefully hurting family members at that age is a red flag. they're old enough to know what hurts and what doesn't and understand why you dont hurt others and show empathy and sympathy to those who are hurt as well. My brother is autistic and was always afraid to lash out at my parents but would go after me aggressively and purposefully because he wanted to hurt someone because he was mad. He threw a rock at me and struck me in the head once, knocked me out and had to go to the hospital for repair. He was probably about 5. He locked me out of the house too so I couldn't get in to get to our mom. Another time he grabbed one of those cat condos that's built with wood and carpet and three it on my head because my mom couldn't make him a paper airplane at that exact moment. searched me out in another room while I watched TV to do this. that hurt like hell but no damage. he was probably about 7 or 8. I probably only survived because I'm older so taller and could handle or defend myself for the most part. lol

have you sat down and talked to the child about this ?. explain how it effects others when they do that kind of thing. then calmly tell them what your plan is to stop this behaviour. for example "I'm going to help you stop using this behaviour as it's wrong and not nice. so every time you hit someone you will have to go to time out and calm down". ( a minute per year of age). if you feel they are to old for this then instead of to old for this. then there could be a wider reason for doing hitting out ?. as why they think they do it etc. could be something simply resolved with out unescceary punishment
