Are promise rings a normal thing in a relationship?

Just get me a nice ring as a gift, don’t say it’s a promise. Then when you finally commit to spending your life with me get me that engagement ring cause that means much more. I think promise rings are for 12 year olds with their head in the clouds

I got one. My then boyfriend gave it to me right before he left for the military as a promise we will stay together and be faithful. About two years later we got married.

I had one. It was very simple silver band with a heart set into it. 
It was given with the message that basically we were committed to each other even though we were no where ready to be married. We were teenagers and didn’t want to get married at least until after college. 
We are now 28/30 and getting married in two months.
