I’m curious what you would do....
My husband is going to be unexpectedly changing jobs (three weeks ago a position perfect for him opened up at his dream company). Our insurance benefits are currently through his employer, and will be at his new job as well. However, as with most employers, his benefits are not supposed to start until the 1st of the month following 60 days of him being employed there. Of course, baby is due during those 60 days. They can’t adjust his start date because he’s essentially opening the office in this area and he can’t start until the company is ready to open. His new boss is going to talk to HR about the possibility of waiving the 60 day rule, so that’s our best option, but definitely not a guarantee. COBRA isn’t an option as it would cost 2/3 of our take home pay for those couple months. We looked at the government health marketplace, and we could pay for very basic insurance for our family of four for about what we pay now, but our out-of-pocket would be significantly more than we were anticipating, but would cover the really scary things like preterm birth, issues at birth, etc.. There’s also the tax penalty for not having coverage next year if we went the “cash patient” route and hoped for the best. I’m just curious what others would do in this situation?
