Male Infertility Issues
Sorry if this is long. Need advice.
Back story: I’m 33, generally healthy. I’ve been pregnant before (age 25, unplanned, only month I’ve ever been off birth control since I was 19, and got pregnant after just one night of unprotected sex, pregnancy was voluntarily terminated). I’ve been off birth control now since August 2017 and TTC with my husband for our first. My periods are on point and perfect every month. I have a 28 day cycle that I have never missed and it comes like clockwork. All paps and gyno visits have always been normal. Every month I have a positive OPK at the same time. So with this, I’m pretty certain I’m fertile.
My husband: age 35, not the healthiest, was a heavy drinker until recently, recently stopped smoking cigarettes, doesn’t workout, eats healthy about 40% of the time. Back in November, he took an at home sperm count test and it came back negative (the test is only a positive or negative for sperm count being above 20million?), so it doesn’t give us a clear picture.
Anyways, I have Kaiser insurance and was told awhile ago that making an appointment to just CONSULT with my doctor about infertility could cost starting at $1,000!!! That’s not including tests and such. So obviously, I am thinking it would be more reasonable for my husband to start the process first by going to his doctor to address the possibility of a low sperm count. He has United HealthCare. I have no idea what would be covered through his insurance. But I just brought this up to him after months of remaining silent because I don’t want him to feel like I’m pointing fingers and blaming him for us not getting pregnant yet. But there’s no point in me sitting around going through this every month when we could be taking active steps to correct issues.
So for all women with partners who have low sperm count... what was the process like to get tested and treated? Costs with insurance? Advice to make him more comfortable and not put the blame on him? Treatments? Effectiveness? And advice is helpful!
