When to pump??

Question

Hi ladies! I’ve been EBF and haven’t offered my 6 week old a bottle yet. Next week I have a dentist appointment and I might be away longer than 2-3 hours so I’ll need to pump for my husband. When is the best time to pump without messing up your supply? Also I want to start pumping maybe once a day or every other day to build up an emergency supply.

I was told by my pediatrician to pump after the first feed of the morning when your supply is highest. That's what I put in the freezer to build a stockpile. We also give one bottle a day and I pump as close to the missed feeding as I can, which is right before I go to bed. So maybe before you leave for your appointment? Then you won't be uncomfortable and engorged when you get back.

Ok I’m sure this is not the answer you want ....
Pump during the night. Either before or after a feed. Preferably before. You’ll get way more than if you pump any other time of day. Even if you pump before there will be more than enough left for baby. Pumping at night will help your supply. With our first she had reflux and so I was forced to pump at night, because I would have too much milk otherwise and then feed her (because of the longer spacing between feedings). The doctor actually recommended it as the best solution to her reflux after middle of the night feedings but also gave me the info on the other benefits. The pediatrician said if I did that I would quickly build up a stash, which was soooo true. It was easiest to set everything up before I went to bed and then I would just do a quick pump session before feeding her.

I pump when I feed, I also ebf. But I’ll pump on the side that’s not being fed from.

Mine is usually highest in the late afternoon,  but I have been exclusively pumping so I can see it,  If you are feeding you can pump on the other side or after you feed your little. there's all kinds of info on Pinterest but basically do what ever works for you!
