Thaniel as a nickname for Nathaniel?

Question

My husband's name is Nathan. I won't get into the reason why, but I don't want to do a junior. So I was considering the name Nathaniel as an alternative but I also don't want to have a lot of name confusion since husband goes by Nate for short. Would Thaniel be a terrible nickname for the baby to go by for short? Has anyone ever heard of it used that way? If it's too weird, I'll obviously go with something else.

the one I knew as a child we called Nattie (Natty) or Nat. nate would also work. Thaniel doesnt feel too much like a "nickname". BUT ITS YOUR PEANUT CALL HIM WHAT YOU WANT

Thaniel sounds a bit Lord of the Rings / RPG -ish to me.  What about Nat or Niel/Neal?
