First ultrasound - no baby just the sac

I had my first ultrasound today and I am measuring at 8 weeks pregnant and they couldn’t see anything but the sac. I have had to get a blood test and another one tomorrow to check my HCG levels. Is this common? Will I be able to see my baby in a few weeks? I am so scared and heartbroken.
