Even if barely anyone buys from your registry, most places do a "completion discount" as incentive for you to buy off your registry (usually 10-15% off either after your due date or shower date), so it's a great way to get a discount on stuff you know you want/need, even if you buy it yourself.

We did an Amazon registry. Most people at my shower bought from the registry. A week or so before the shower, my completion discount was activated, so after the shower I was able to buy what was left at a 15% discount. I also received $100 towards diapers and wipes, and when I signed up for the registry, I got a welcome box with all kinds of samples and products (bottle, onesie, pacifier, wipes, diaper samples, etc.).  Highly recommend!

I think it's up to people to get you what they choose, should they wish to give you something. Here in the UK baby showers are far less common and the thought of putting a registry together for one seems very rude to me. Surely just a nice day seeing those you love will be enough. If they want to get you things I'd be very grateful...but not expect anything. Maybe it's a cultural difference though. Us Brits are a bit more traditional. I know many couples who don't even do wedding lists.

I got a lot of stuff off my registry, but we also didn't know the sex so people didn't get as many clothes as I've seen others get. Even if people don't buy the specific items from your registry or from that store, it lets them know what you need or want.

Make a registry, but don’t expect people to buy much from it! People loooove to get you what they think you need. Hopefully they’ll include gift receipts, if not I got pretty good at figuring out what went to Walmart vs. Target and got a ton back in store credit so we could get what was on our lists!

I had a lot of problems with people not buying off the registry, but I just returned things and bought what I wanted! I also liked the organization of having the registry.

I made a registry on Amazon w/ about 50 items on, all different price points, I think people bought 5 things off of it, mostly they made blankets or bought outfits they thought were cute, my shower was in November 2016 so for Xmas that year my hubby went on Amazon & bought a bunch of the things we really needed off the list & then wrapped them as a surprise for me, it was fun opening it all & then getting it set up before our daughter was born in February 2017
Long story short the registry is handy whether people buy off of it for you or not because at the very least it acts as a list of all the things you need

Make one for sure.. even if no one buys from it you should be able to get a welcome gift AND when it’s near the end the place will send you a discount to shop for the items you didn’t get. Win win.
