Advice - does an angry partner ever get better?

My SO and I have been together on and off over 7 years. He is a heavy weed smoker and every so often tries to quit. when he stops smoking he is incredibly angry and disrespectful to me. This came to a head last weekend when we had a friend of mine staying. We had an argument and he pushed me leaving some bad bruising on my chest from his hands.My friend was so uncomfortable she cut her trip short. My question is, can a relationship come back from something like that? I recently moved with him to his country, in an isolated area where I just about speak the language, I'm working and he is searching for work. I'm scared of being on my own here, but I know that's not a reason to be in a relationship. help please.
