Last male White Rhino has died, what are your thoughts?!

Question

Today the last male white rhino has died, leaving only hope with IVF with the remaining females to try and save this precious species that survived millions of years but can't survive human kind. What do you think needs to happen to better protect animals, endangered and non endangered? Do you think that humans play a key role in animal declines? Do you think laws and punishments need to change?! Conservation work is very dear to my heart and I'd love to hear what others have to say.

I truly think more focus needs to be put on saving and building numbers, harsher punishments and actual justice for the poaching that continues to take place. We have entire species dying because of poor education, a hidden black market that governments do pretty much nothing about , a lack of funding for protecting and further educating people. The news needs to put more focus on stories such as these, as they are life changing for the entire world. This sickens and saddens my heart and really pushes me to up my efforts in conservation and education. People can either save or destroy, and sadly I see more people destroying our planet and species than protecting it.

Honestly I think that it’s super difficult/near impossible to preserve a species when it gets to that level of being severely endangered
These animals end up having 24/7 protection from armed people to help protect from poachers. People cut off their horns to deter anyone hunters profiting off of the Ivory trade. People are artificially inseminating the females in hopes of boosting the population. 
Sadly the damage done by ivory traders and trophy hunters went too far to come back from 😔

This is really sad. We knew it was going to happen, but it’s sad nonetheless. 
On a general level, I think people need to be more aware of laws surrounding animal protection. Not many people take enough of an interest to know. I also think that animal abuse is overlooked. Many make an active decision not to report abuse, which makes no sense to me. I think there should be raised awareness of spotting signs of animal abuse and who to contact to report the abuse.
I think it’s most important to raise our children right, if I’m honest. It’s important to keep pets and teach our children to love animals, and to approach them with kindness and love. It’s a common mistake to bring kids up believing that animals are inferior to humans and ‘they should be kept in their place.’ We should have mercy in our hearts, not everything needs a hierarchy of power. Its important that our kids can grow with a passion for helping those in need, animals and humans alike.
I wish I had an answer for poaching, but sadly, I do not.

We knew it was coming but this just breaks my heart. Our planet has existed and evolved for millions of years and to look at the statistics of the last centuries that clearly show the impact humans had on our wildlife is sickening. 
I think there needs to be way more attention drawn to these things, how they affect our planet and how to prevent them. Conservation projects need more funding and poaching and even illegal trophy hunting need harder punishments. The governments have to put more focus on the black market and the illegal export of trophies out of those countries. Sadly, most of the officials that should stop this from happening just like to fill their own pockets to turn around and pretend nothing’s happening. I remember the time I spent in South Africa, the people I talked to said even if it’s still better than most other African countries the corruption there is still crazy. The are no real repercussions to exporting illegal trophies or selling them if you just know who to pay off.
Same when I went to south East Asia. If a country has a higher poverty rate the people living there are easier convinced to get into poaching or selling on the black market. They want to feed their families no matter what. Being interested and invested in wildlife conservation and natural reserve is mostly only possible if you have the financial status to afford it. Being interested in saving our planet or at least protecting as much as possible shouldn’t be an indication of wealth. This affects all of us. 
I think in combination with stronger punishments those countries need better economies. If there are enough jobs I think people would be less inclined to get into illegal doings such as poaching. So I guess that would be a good starting point.
I hope we can prevent things like that in the future, but it sure doesn’t look like it. My parents both work in environmental fields, I’m getting my degree in ecological sciences, and there are far more species that have been (almost) extinct in the last few years that we usually hear about. They don’t report it like they do with the white rhino cause some of them are not as known but I know (at least in Europe) we are slowly losing our wildlife 😢

Humans suck! We can’t be happy with what we can do ourselves and steal things from other animals. The way in which the keepers and such have to actually remove horns now off rhino’s is actually disgusting but they have to do what they have to do to save them. It’s just so mad that they have to go to that length in order to save the few rhinos that are now left.

I believe people will have had a great part in extincting this poor species. A lot of people illegally poach or do trophy killing. In these countries you hear of people kilking even animals that are protected but they have no disregard.
