My birth story (first time mom)
So I never really read these until it was close to my due date, but I figured since I’m up with the baby, I’d finally write mine. I know it’s super long, but I’m a first time mom and I didnt want to leave anything out. Lol. So here it goes....
My due date was March 17, which also happens to be my grandmas birthday, she was turning 93. I had gone to see her March 8th and asked her what she wanted for her birthday, and she replied all she wanted was a healthy baby boy to put on her lap. I was like oh okay no pressure lol. The whole 9 months I never had one contraction, I hadn’t lost a single bit of my mucus plug, I had no bleeding, nothing. I was walking a bunch, bouncing on a ball, taking super hot baths, and the dr even did a membrane sweep but nothing was happening. I was super frustrated because I kept reading stories of other moms losing their mucus plug and having their bloody shows and this that and the third and I was like why isn’t my body doing any of these things??? Anyways so the next day March 9th I started having lower back pains like you would have with your period. I was confused because I didn’t know if that was considered a contraction or if the contractions had to be in the stomach (I’m a first time mom if you couldn’t tell by now lol). So I called my dr and she told me to time them and if they became consistent to call back. So I decided I was going to go walking, so I went and walked 2 miles, went to Walmart, and ran a few other errands. I continued to have the contractions and they were consistently 3-5 mins apart, 30 secs at least and this happened for 3 hours. So I called the dr back and she was like yes you should go to the hospital. So I called my boyfriend and he came home to take me to the hospital. I was nervous because I didn’t want to drive all the way to the hospital (we live 45 mins away) just to be sent home because I was in false labor. But we went anyways. So we get to the hospital at 5 pm and they check me and I’m at 3cm and 60% effaced, so they’re like we don’t want to admit you yet, go ahead and walk the floor for 2 hours and we will check you again to see if you’ve progressed. So me and my boyfriend walk for 2 hours in a big circle around the delivery floor, I’m having contractions consistently and mind you I wanted to have no epidural during labor I wanted to sit in the bath tub and labor. So at this point the contractions are still bareable and my boyfriend is being super supportive and helping me thru every one of them. We go back and I’m 4cm and 70% effaced. She was like I’m still not 100% sure your in active labor so go ahead and walk 2 more hours. So we walked and walked. The contractions are getting much more powerful and I couldn’t sit or lay down because they were WAY worse. My legs felt like jello at this point. So we stop and I get checked again and I was still the same. So she was like since you live so far away I don’t want to send you home just yet so go ahead and walk for 2 more hours and see if you progress anymore. So we walk, even more. By this point my contractions are like 1 min apart and lasting 30-45 seconds. They are unbareable. I’m in the floor crying, and my boyfriend is being so supportive and rubbing my back. But at this point I felt like I was dying. I would cry because I could feel them coming on and I didn’t want the pain anymore. So they check me again and I haven’t changed. So the dr was like since your 38 and 6 days we can’t do anything to further your labor at this point. Mind you it’s 11pm at this point and in an hour I would technically be 39 weeks. But anyways they were going to send me home to do therapeutic rest (which is when they give you a shot of morphine to ease the pain of the contractions so you can sleep and get energy up for labor) and come back in the morning but she came back and said instead of sending you home we will keep you overnight for observation of pain and check you again in the morning. So I was still having contractions overnight but they weren’t as bad. The next morning she checked me and I still hadn’t progressed. So the dr told me that I could either go home and labor and come back when I was in active labor or they could induce me since I was 39 weeks. So I thought about it, and I was truly concerned for 1 because my contractions were consistent, and unless my water broke how was I to know if I was truly in labor? And 2 because there was a winter storm coming and since I live 45 mins away I didn’t want to go home and then get snowed in at my house to have the baby there. So I choose to get induced. I also chose the epidural( I praise any woman who can labor naturally!). So I got induced at 9 in the morning and by 630pm I had started pushing. So no one told me that it’s not like the movies, it’s not just 3 pushes and the baby is out. You push for hours, depending on you and the baby. So I pushed for 2 hours and 36 mins and my precious baby boy was here. I don’t get to hold him long though because we both got an infection during labor. I can’t remember what the name of it was but it was something because I had a fever and something about when they broke my water earlier that the placenta could cause me and the baby to get an infection. So he went to the nursery to get started on antibiotics immediately. I on the other hand was getting stitched up since I had a third degree tear and they started me on antibiotics. All in all it was a hectic ordeal, but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I now have my beautiful baby boy and I have the best boyfriend a girl could ask for. He was there the entire time, supporting me and helped me with anything I needed but most importantly he was there to make me laugh. I know this is super long, but I figured maybe another first time mom would like to read about my birth story.
