Views on who pays what?

Question

Just wondering who pays for what in a relationship. Currently I pay all the bills and my partner pays for the rent. He is now saying I don’t pay enough and he also wants me to pay towards the rent. I also have my car to sort out ( he doesn’t drive ) 
My outgoings a month is ridiculous to what I actually get paid, my partner gets paid a lot more then me. 
He also drinks and gambles a lot. So I think he is only asking me to help him so he can afford his habit more.

Are you totally aware of his full financial situation as most gamblers are in some sort of debt

My husband and I have our own checking accounts. We split the bills 50/50. I add them all up and divide it by two and tell him what he owes me for bills. Now he has his truck payment, I have mine, he pays his phone, I pay mine. It works well for us.

We have a joint account which both of our money goes in to. All the bills come from there and we just spend what we want 🤷‍♀️ I earn more and I don’t mind or count it or anything, but I know not everyone does this. 
Maybe you could total up the monthly income and work out what % each of you contributes. Then contribute that % to the overall bills of that makes sense. Then you are both paying an amount that is fair to tour individual incomes x

There is no right or wrong answer. You and your partner need to find a method that you both think is fair and are happy with. Some people split the bills 50/50. Some use a percentage of their income each towards bills. Some combine all finances. If you want a more matter or fact approach I feel the percentage of each of your take home salary is the easiest solution. That way you both are contributing “equally.” Splitting the bills is also similar but if one person makes much more than the other it is going to be difficult for the person making less money.

We have always said he would pay the mortgage as he gets paid more than me & I pay the bills. We don't have a joint account, but might consider it as now fingers crossed for no. 1 baby & married last year.

We share everything .  I worked full time before I got pregnant ( quit due to to long of a commute in winter and to many chemicals and mold ) but anyways we have always shared basically since we met . We do not have a joint account but that’s mainly because neither of us have time to go into the bank to make one with his hours of work especially.. I just transfer my bills over and then take out cash for spending for the both of us 🤷‍♀️ it really depends what works in your relashionship. Even thou I stay home now and will be a stay at home mom we will still share everything lol obviously but even when I worked we did . It’s not his or mine it’s ours ☺️☺️

You need to work out a system that works for you. Each situation will be different 
My husband and I for example moved country together when we were still dating and so moved in together and got a joint account. Our money has been 100% combined ever since regardless of salary. 
Now we have a strict budget because we’re saving for a house so all our expenses are worked out in advance and we have various accounts for different expenses such as shopping bills etc. we also have an account each where we get an “allowance” so that we can freely spend on ourselves without affecting anything else. Works for us!
