How do you know diapers are working?

Stupid question but this is my first baby and I’m wondering what are some things to look for to know if a certain diaper brand is or isn’t working for your baby? I’ve heard some babies can’t use certain brands because of skin sensitivities and other things. What would be something that you, as a first time mom, would make you change brands of diapers or even wipes? Also how do you know if it’s the diaper that’s the problem or the wipes?

For most it’s not a matter of rashes but just preference. An allergy or reaction will show as a rash and that’s a reason to change it up but most mums also find they like a certain brand for whatever reason
Rashes can also pop up from food intolerances or a food that just doesn’t sit right or even being sick so it’s not always the nappies 
For me I started with huggies but they’re expensive and bub started leaking out of them at night. Now we use baby love and no leaking and we only need to change when he poops because it absorbs so much! We will use the same brand for our next bub for the same reason and don’t bother trying others anymore. Same with wipes - we like huggies or baby love wipes because they’re thick and don’t have a disinfectant smell. 
And if in doubt always ask! Any mums you know have probably seen it before and your doctor is a great resource

rashes are a big sign. If your baby is constantly leaking through diapers that fit properly (sometimes you just have to go up a size, you can't always go by the weight suggestions for diapers). To know if it's wipes, if you've swapped diaper brands, but baby is still having an allergic reaction, it's probably the wipes, or if you're using cream. Always bring up bad rashes to the pediatrician. They can help determine the allergy, if it is an allergy. Sometimes, your baby will just get a diaper rash 🤷‍♀️ it sucks, but a personal preference, I've found butt paste works great

Pretty common sense here. If it’s leaking or causing rashes, it’s probably not working.

Rashes, leaking, bad fit around legs or belly.
We weren’t using the sensitive wipes at one point and baby’s poor butt started bleeding 😥
We used plain paper towels for a day and the  switched to sensitive wipes. He seems to be better now.
