Is a receiving blanket the same thing as a swaddle?

Setting up my registry and I'm looking at a checklist that says I'll need 4 to 6 receiving blankets. Just wondering if these are pretty much the same thing as a swaddle. 🤷🏻‍♀️

You can swaddle with a receiving blanket. Receiving blankets are typically squares of flannel or thin cotton, traditionally used to wrap newborns. They sell actual swaddle blankets now that are bigger or have Velcro to make swaddling easier, but those aren’t necessary if you know how to use a flat blanket. Personally I liked receiving blankets as an all-purpose thing. Great for throwing over baby in the car seat, using as a makeshift nursing cover, to change baby on, as a burp cloth, etc.

I never knew there were so many different types of blankets for a baby until I had my shower lol and I didn't really put them on my registry but there was like 7 different kinds I got once I separated stuff lol

When my kids were babies, I used a receiving blanket as a swaddle. Worked just as good.

Swaddles are made with a more breathable material. Receiving blankets are thicker and not as stretchy. We use the receiving blankets we got as a blanket to put on baby when we take her out and as extra burp cloths. I love our swaddle blankets!

I think a Recieving blanket is thicker. Swaddles are thin and lightweight from what I’ve seen.

The hospital uses the same blankets as swaddles and that’s what they use to teach you how to swaddle. You can use any small blanket to swaddle tho

I'm a mom of 3 going on 4. Receiving blankets tend to be smaller. The ones at the hospital are larger than the average receiving blanket. Also, receiving blankets are not as breathable. I highly recommend using receiving blankets for burp cloths and changing pad covers. They're cheap, absorbent and they wash well. For swaddling, I recommend muslin blankets. They're bigger, breathable, and softer. I'd get 3 or 4 muslin, and 10 receiving.

you can swaddle with recieving blankets & i suggest getting wayyyyyy more than that. recieving blankets can be used for a lot.

I honestly thing you only need 1 or 2 swaddles and 0 receiving blankets. You won't use them for very long.
