How reliable are condoms alone when used correctly?

So I know that condoms are only like 99% effective per year when used perfectly - no rips, tears etc. and will be put on before any sexual things so no chance of a precum caused pregnancy.
But I want to know from a ‘real life’ source - how reliable are they? Has anyone been using them for a long amount of time and if so have you had any problems? I’m new to sex and don’t want to get on the birth control pill at the moment, and I was wondering if I should wait or if I’m still okay to use the condom method (I won’t have sex on my fertile window if that makes a difference.)

When properly used... ie not expired, correct size, guy not an idiot but rather one you trust. They work well, like probably at 300 condoms and still not pregnant, (without other birth control).

That said, before my current serious relationship,  I once was with a guy and the condom broke before he was even in and I called him out that I heard a snap. (fairly sure he put it on backwards, hard enough that he made it snap... but somehow this guy didnt know it, even after it snapped) the guy wasn't the smartest dude on the block. So be wary if used for casual encounters.

8 years of using condoms and no other method of birth control and I *knock on wood* haven't gotten pregnant. We want kids in the future but it's just not time yet 😊
