Which order should we Hyphenate our sons last name?

My last name is Valdez and my boyfriends last name is Orta. We are hyphenating his last name because we are not married and when we do get married I plan on hyphenating my last name. My last name is VERY important to me so I never want to give it up.

Well I feel the kid should get the dad’s last name so yours should go first and then his so that his last name will still technically be last but if your kid decides to shorten it when they write their name in school then your bf should go first so that that’s the babie’s real name first and then yours is “added” on
