How to make into a bookbag?

My mother in-law bought a bag that looks like a gym bag but without the straps to carry on your back! But does have the rope type to tie. Well she wants me to make it into a back pack but I'm having a brain fart! any ideas would be grateful!!!

She has one of those cinching top bags you just toss over your shoulder.  You can pop the stitching in 4 sections and add some adjustable straps and sew it back up . Do you have a sewing machine?  Or you and add heavy duty metal snap buttons so she can remove the straps whenever.
