when do u technically start your period?

first of all let me make it clear that my periods have never been normal so I don't really know...... anywho do you start your period once you start spotting or do you start your period once it really starts flowing?

When I start my period, I start off strong. I usually bleed quite a bit the first two days, then the next three it kind of tapers off
