How do you feel about Utah’s law regarding Free Range Parenting?

I think it's fucking ridiculous that there needs to be laws saying kids can play outside alone. I also think it's dumb as shit those parents in the past were charged with neglect. The government needs to buttttttt out!

I think that the government shouldn’t have gone after parents for their kids playing outside and walking to and from school to begin with 🤷🏻‍♀️
But it’s nice to see parents won’t be crucified for letting kids be kids.

I remember coming home from elementary school and ditching my backpack at home and then roaming with the other neighborhood kids for hours. I guess I was free range as well. As long as the kids are in buddy systems I don’t mind.

10 is for sure old enough to walk to a park and home.

Uhm this was my childhood? I’m a 100% organic free range child. I think it’s ridiculous and sad that it’s come to a point where we need laws for that. It’s not like they were infants 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's stupid that it needs to be a law but I'm glad it is. The helicopter parenting fad has gotten a bit out of control I think. It didn't used to be this way.

I'd be curious to find out when exactly this cultural shift took place. I grew up in the 90s and early 2000s and would stay out after dark running around the neighborhood and my parents never cared as long as me and my brothers came home by bed time. But it seems like such a concern to young parents nowadays to always hover over their children because of possible child abductions. How often does that actually happen versus how much publicity do high profile missing persons cases get and when did that start happening?

I don't agree with it. That's way too young of an age for kids to be allowed to go so far from home, and I think parents who let their young kids go that far are irresponsible. Playing in your own yard? that's fine. a couple houses down with a friend (with their parent home)? thats also fine. but going any further than that is a risk to their safety, and I don't think that's okay. Who are the parents going to be mad at if something happened to their child that could have been prevented by adult supervision?

I want to know what happened?!?! One day I was outside playing BY MYSELF and nobody batted an eye, which I think is totally okay because that was the way that it was and I loved it, and now we can’t let our children go outside without us being right beside them the whole time? I mean come on if they can’t go outside alone can they not use the bathroom alone or do we have to hold their hand while they use it until they turn 13? Maybe we’ll all just quit our jobs and follow them around until they can take care of themselves and they probably won’t ever learn how to because they can’t do anything by themselves, we’re the ones doing it!
