Lost mucus plug multiple times?

I feel like I have lost and regenerated my mucus plug multiple times, is that possible? I know my doctor has said it regenerates, but how do I know when it's actually happening because I'm going to go into labor soon. The last time I lost it, I felt like I had a tampon in, and then when I went to the bathroom it came out, that was at about 25 weeks. I'm now 36+2 weeks and have been crampy and started having parts come out again. Has anyone else experienced this?
