ANY NURSES IN THE HOUSE??!!!?!

I'm on my way to becoming a nurse and I want to hear about others experience from the journey to becoming one to actually working as one. tell me about your specific field as a nurse (emergency, elder care,etc) and just your overall experience. I would love to hear everyone's stories and thank you in advance

I'm an RN working in a hospital on a respiratory unit, nursing School was tough.  You need support from your family especially the person you are staying with cz you'll become a sloppy mess. You'll also need support from your school buddies i.e fellow nursing students. Find someone in your class you can vent to and study with. I always say there's four stages to becoming a nurse and each one comes with its own challenges. The 1st stage is getting accepted to a program. Congratulations if you already have cz that's hard. The 2nd stage is Being in nursing school and staying in it.  It's very easy to fail and get kicked out of nursing school. There's rules and exams are tricky. The third stage is getting out of nursing school i.e passing the NCLEX. Boy is that also nerve wrecking. Andthe last stage is being  a new grad nurse. That is also challenging in itself.  I say it it one stage at a time. Celebrate the wins, expect a few loses. Perfection is not your friend. When you are a nurse, your coworkers can make or break your job experience. I had good coworkers and a good preceptor as a new grad so that made my transition not so hard. Believe in yourself. Being a nurse is hard because someone's life is often in your hands. Learn the doctors you are working with so you can learn to communicate with them. You'll have better rapport with some than others. Find humor in stuff. When you make your first med error, you will feel like shit. This is normal but always assess to make sure your patient is fine. Report the error too.  Let your patients safety always be your first priority. Do stuff that promote it and don't fear to call out someone jeopardizing it. You are your  patients biggest advocate. Empower ypur patients to advocate for themselves too. I love being a nurse but it's exhausting. Take time for yourself cz you will burn out if you don't and that's when things start going really bad.
