Have you or do you own a pet hamster?

Question

I’m thinking of getting one, they’re such adorable animals. I’m generally a cat person, I’ve never had a hamster so is there anything I should know before adopting ?

I’ve had 2 syrian hamsters and 2 robos (I was an adult when I had them, not a kid). Syrians need to be kept alone- 1 to a cage as they as very territorial and will fight until one dies. They are actually very affectionate and can be social with you unlike what the other poster said. You have to learn to tame them when you bring them home which can take some time and effort. Google has lots of tips on how to do it properly without stressing them out. Wet tail is common with hamsters but keep them comfortable and their environment clean and they’ll be fine. I only cleaned their cages every couple weeks. I also made a point to take them out of their cages and let them run around in an empty spare bedroom for about an hour almost every night. This also really helped them become extremely comfortable with me and they’d climb on me constantly and snuggle at times as well. They knew the sound of my voice and would respond to me when I walked into a room. They’re of course nocturnal so theyre very active at night. They run on their wheels all night so if you don’t find the noise calming like I did you may want to put them in another room overnight. Any other questions just ask! I loved having my hammies!

Well I guess advice from my side is that they are not worth it. Hamsters are rarely friendly and usually just want to be left alone. They're very cute to look at but they stink and to keep them from getting wet tail you need to clean their cage constantly. Rats smell just as much and require the same amount of cleaning but are actually intelligent and affectionate if handled often. I've had both and wouldn't adopt either again but would go for a rat over a hamster if I had to choose.

We had a dwarf hamster. He was super cute. But he was so tiny we couldn’t really let him run around cause he would get lost. We only had him a few months. He liked to run on his wheel and then fly out of it and smash into his cage.. so yeah.

i  bought a hamster when I was 12 😑 that little rat thingy was pregnant with 10 hamsters!! 😂 ended up having 32 hamsters. my mom was so mad 😂

He lived 3 years. Had the best personality ever. I recommend either a Syrian hamster or guinea pig. Best little guys ever
