What’s the point of engagement rings??

Can someone explain the purpose of engagement rings to me? Like what do you with them after you get married? I just don’t get the point if you’re just spending money only to replace it with another ring

Engagement rings started during the renaissance, with an archduke when he proposed to his love (or match, as people with title mostly married for money/land/better title etc back then) with a diamond ring and that’s started the upper class of society to start the diamond//gemstone rings, although wedding bands can be traced back to Egyptian times. The purpose of an engagement ring then was more of a class and societal think, look at this sparkly thing I can afford the peasants can’t! And now is to signify intent, and to make it clear to other possible suitors that this person is spoken for. It can be archaic in a sense and from a feminist point of view, seem demeaning but over times I think we’ve adapted to to mean I love this person I want to spend my life with them and make sure the world knows it. Typically you wear the engagement ring AND the wedding band together, though most of my married relatives stopped wearing the engagement ring over time (usually around the time they had kids) but there’s no limit to how long you can wear one. You can wear it from the day you get proposed to until you die and then on! 😂

It’s the symbol of love and commitment hence it is in the form of a ring. A ring signifies infinity, something that won’t end. When a man gives a ring to a woman it means his commitment and love won’t end, its infinite. Well, it supposed to mean it and each partner live up to it.
