What do you think the governments most important job is?

I’ve been watching too much parks and rec and this question popped up. What do you guys think?

To represent and be the voice of the people, keep them safe. Yet that hardly fucking happens now 💁🏼

The security of our nation and keeping order. That was their original purpose. 
How far it’s drifted from that purpose over 240 years later. 🙁

That being said, what a government should do for the people and what is actually done today are two different things. I always enjoyed how Hammurabi described his duty in his codex. 
„At that time I, Hammurabi, the pious, god-fearing prince, was called forth by name for the welfare of the people:
To cause justice to appear in the world, to destroy the evil and the wicked so that the strong should not oppress the weak, and to rise like Shamash to give light to the land. . . .“
Now mind you his codex was written circa 1780 BC but I always enjoyed the part about the strong not oppressing the weak because it’s a problem we’re still facing to this day. And that should be the government‘s duty. 
As for actual tasks, upholding the laws and keeping their country safe for everyone while executing their citizens will (in a democracy). They’re not doing a really good job imo.

Security of our nation, keeping order, and upholding our freedoms. I think we could do a lot better, but I still think they’re doing pretty well at it in comparison to other places in the world.

I don't know about most important but water is one people really forget about. Drinking and waste. Some people (myself included) use private wells and septic but we all use the water and/or benefit from sewage not being dumped into our waterways :)
