Baby choking while eating??

Question

I am exclusively breastfeeding my baby and have since she was born. She is now a little more than 5 weeks old. She sometimes chokes/ starts coughing a lot while eating. She has done it since she was probably 2 weeks old but it is happening more often the past week.  Why is she doing this? Is there anything I can do to stop it from happening? I usually lay back a bit while she is eating to see if it helps but she still does it.

I would say that you may just have a very strong/fast let down reflex. My little girl did the same thing when she was around that age. Eventually over time it wasn’t so bad and she was able to handle it. If you’re able to feel when let down happens for you take a bib or  burp cloth and unlatch baby and allow the milk to go onto that then latch baby back on. Eventually you lo will get the hang of it and won’t choke. Good luck momma

like others said,  could be strong let down.  could also be that baby has a high palate and poor bollus control if there's any tongue tie and so cannot press tongue all the way to roof of mouth.

Your flow could be too much for a baby. Pumping for just a few minutes before feeding baby should help. Taking off just the top will make eating more enjoyable for baby.
