When you got mine they said it was fine to have sex but to use additional protection - condoms - for 2 weeks to avoid infection and give it chance to kick in and become effective.

my doctor never said anything about waiting. if you got yours on your period, the IUD works immediately. getting it inserted while not menstruating delays the effectiveness for about a week or two.

When I had my IUD she cleared me for intercourse after the bleeding stopped which was 3 days. I waited a week though.
