no epidural?

Question

how many first time moms have birth without an epidural? how was it? what helped you through it? was it worth it? I'm not sold on giving birth without one but it is something I'm going to try VERY hard not to do. would also like to hear sides of people who DID use the epidural and what kind you had

I didnt have one. Glad I didn't as I got to leave hospital so much sooner. An hour after giving birth I was on my feet, showered and enjoying cuddles waiting to leave hospital!

there are other pain medications you can take besides the epidural that help take the edge off. talk to your doctor about all of your options. I didn't have an epidural but I did have laughing gas to help with the contractions the first time.

I’ve never been pregnant, but I really want to deliver naturally I think. I’m scared of the epidural messing up my back long term and that it won’t work.

I did end up having the epidural both my births which were inductions. My epidurals were a positive experience. It didn't hurt to get in (the iv was worse) and it really bothered me to walk to the bathroom constantly with the iv, so I was actually fine with being confined to the bed. I asked for a low dose of the meds so I could still feel the contractions and pushing and could kinda move my legs, but I wasn't in pain. Since I was comfortable, I had visitors in and out of my room keeping me company during my labor, watched a movie etc till show time. I could feel the baby come out and it hurt but wasn't painful. After I delivered the placenta and they shut it off, I was up and walking and showering within 10-15 minutes. No side effects both times I had it.
I think natural birth is great but I also think the epidural gets a bad reputation, so if you end up feeling like you need it don't be scared of it.

I had an unmedicated water birth and it was great. I read Ina May's guide to childbirth which helped a lot with useful visualisations. I also hired a doula which was useful as well!

all throughout my pregnancy I wanted a natural birth, didn't have any Braxton Hicks or anything and I woke up one morning in labor. I had really bad back labor so I asked for the epidural, it made things so much better but they had to keep turning me each hour to get the epidural to work on both sides.

I took Bradley Method classes with my husband, and gave birth without considering an epidural. It hurt, but as soon as baby was out, I was fine.

I had a my daughter without getting an epidural for me the only thing that helped was my step rubbing my lower back !! I don’t regret it at all although it was very painful ! I plan on never getting an epidural with any future pregnancies !
