Period pain while ovulating

I've had pretty bad cramping while ovulating where I was two seconds from putting a tampon in until I saw the fertile CM. I knew it wasn't time for me to but I woke up with the cramping and bloating and felt like I was going to start any minute. That was 2 days ago and a heating pad helped but I've never experienced ovulation cramping like this? I've read some people do but has anyone had ovulation feel like they're going to start their period?
