I was a thumb sucker for many years, my mom tried everything to get me to stop but I wouldn’t listen, it was soothing to me and helped me fall asleep. Unfortunately it messed with my teeth bad! I needed to get braces because it caused a big gap between my two front teeth and pushed them out. I was always embarrassed to smile until I finally got braces in high school.

I sucked my thumb as a child and since then I can’t stop biting my nails. I would bite my nails instead of sucking my thumb to so people wouldn’t make fun of me as much, and now the nail biting habit is worse than ever. I’d rather my children have a pacifier to avoid what happened with me.

Sure thumbs are great for self soothing.... until they go to school and their 'friends' call them a baby and make fun of them. You can't take a thumb away but you can take a pacifier away. Thumbs are attached for life.

it’s technically “better” than using a pacifier, however it’s a lot harder to break the habit of sucking a finger.

would rather they do that then a pacifier. learning to self sooths then relie on something that can get lost or down the line can mess with teeth & speech

I sucked my first and middle finger for a ridiculously long time growing up and other than a slight overbite, I have perfect teeth and never needed braces 🤷🏼‍♀️

My brother was a thumb sucker and he has a huge bump on his thumb from it. He’s almost 13 and it’s still there and very prominent. His teeth are a little messed up too but not bad.
