What are the Pros & Cons to getting pain relief for a FTM
Do you regret anything?

I loved my epidural. The idea of a natural birth is cool but I wasn’t trying to prove anything to myself. Epidural was 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼

I had my first all natural 16hrs water birth helped a lot. Second was born in 21mins and Third was back to back he got stuck but came in 20mins. I don't regret any of it and I felt great after each one. I was just happy we were all ok and that I finally had my babies in my arms. I'm on #4 and hope it all goes the same.

We are the type of family that likes natural everything and so with my first, for a while I regretted getting the epidural and kinda wished I did everything naturally. Then with my second, (long story short) I waited too long to get the epidural so I basically felt everythingggg and the contractions and labor were so insanely painful. It’s kinda nice to say that I’ve been through both and it was definitely interesting to feel the head coming through etc, but I would never ever choose to go through that pain again.

I had an epidural and I’ve never regretted it for a second. I was induced and Pitocin is no joke. The epidural made it so I could sleep through a lot of my labor so I had the energy to push. I had zero after effects, it had basically completely worn off by the time my little one entered the world.

It is really difficult to decide on forehand what you want, because each Labour is different and you don’t know how much pain you will have/can handle. Also depends on how long you are in labour/tired you are etc etc. I really wanted a natural birth, but during labour the pain was unbearable. I literally told the nurse that if she didn’t give me an epidural I would jump out of the window. So in the end I am glad I got an epidural, otherwise I would have not wanted to go trough this again. I’m pregnant with number two and hope that this one comes out a bit easier.

1. They can mess it up. It doesn't happen badly often, but it does happen.
2. It can wear off, or sometimes only work on one side
3. If you get an epidural you can't walk, which helps labor
4. If you get an epidural you can't really use your legs, so you can only give birth lying on your back, which is the worst position for tearing.

An epidural obviously makes you pretty immobile from the waste down, so if baby gets stuck in a bad position in your pelvis, there's no option to walk and rotate your hips to try to move the baby. So, your only option would be c-section.

If your hospital offers it, I suggest nitrous oxide (laughing gas). I used it for my first baby and was so happy I did. They let me control it and make the call for when I wanted it. I wasn’t allowed to use it during delivery, just labor, but I felt it was the best option for me. The only downside was that I had complications immediately after delivery and wished I would have had more pain killers then because that pain hurt worse than the contractions and delivery.

I wanted natural. Went into natural labor. Still in labor I was begging for pain relief when a contraction hit then it was over and I was like I can do this no biggie 😂 At 6cm I got the epidural it worked until 8cm(about 3 hours) I started to feel on one side even though they kept readying medicine. Some contractions I could feel strong, some I could barely feel. I still felt the fire of the head coming out and them sowing me up. I regret getting it some because I felt like it only helped 3 hours out of 15. What helped me was before I kept getting the urge to pee because the contractions pushing on my bladder and getting up to pee with a zillion cords hooked to you is a pain but with the epidural you get a catheter.

I think you will know when the time comes. I didn't have pain meds the first time. I was really pleased and glad to know I could do it. I did not have a good class for breathing, though, so I took another birthing class prior to my 2nd. That was so good - I labored at home and arrived at the hospital at 8cm!!
