It wasn’t unbearable but yes, painful first two, and uncomfortable with gradually less discomfort the more times.
So, I had a period of six years where I was not dating or having sex after a very bad relationship. 
It was painful the first few times then, like starting over. And even now, from time to time it can uncomfortable at first. But it gets better.
(Lube seriously helps a lot, even if you’re already wet)
