Soooo confuseddd

I’ve been friends with this guy for a while now, and I’ve also liked him for a bit. One day he will flirt with me and another he will act like nothing ever happened and we are just friends. Sometimes he will answer me in short answers and sometimes he will get really into the conversation we are having. A couple weeks ago he started flirting with me (more than he ever has) and he says something along the lines of “maybe I’ve always liked you” the next day I asked him about it and he says he doesn’t remember anything from the night before ( he got hurt at baseball and said that’s why he doesn’t remember much, he’s okay now) I’m just so confused as to if he actually likes me because he hasn’t said anything else about that night nor has flirted with me as much as that night (he still does every once in a while) Can anyone explain??
