Why is my fertil window so long?

My mom told me that people can get pregnant for only 24 hours because that’s when the egg dies. Me and my boyfriend don’t have sex when I’m ovulating or on my period but I hate not being able to have sex for most of the month.

Because a man's sperm can survive in your uterus for up to 5 days and a women's eggs are viable for up to 48 hours. So that's 7 days of every cycle where you can get pregnant. If a man finishes in you any time in the 5 days leading up to your day of ovulation or 2 days after, you can and probably will get pregnant.

Well to start with, sperm can live in your body for 5-7 days, just waiting for an egg to be released so that they can fertilize it. So while you may only release an egg one day each cycle, there is not just a 24 hour period in which you can have sex and get pregnant.
Secondly, this app is simply trying to predict your ovulation date based on the length of your cycle. It is in no way a reliable method of preventing pregnancy. Its best guess is somewhere within the week-long fertile window that it gives you, but you could ovulate at any point in your cycle.

I think that's when your fertile, and when it's your ovulation then don't be intimate and wait a bit? 
Or if your really worried then maybe think of contraceptives?
