Too much expectation, or not setting boundaries ??

Recently a friend of mine put her hand up to look after a friends dog because their yard was too small (they also have another laboradore but kept him) 
They said it would be for approximately 1 year, which ended up being18monhs so far,and they still live in the same city quite close actually.
Not once did they take their dog for a walk, not once in that year did they offer to pay for food for the dog or grooming.. (The dog is a border collie and so gorgeous)

Anyway my friend has moved house now with an even better yard and her family/kids have fallen in love with him, she texted the dogs family to let them know she was moving house and wants to save for their own dog considering they would be taking their dog back.

My question is, would you still look after your dog if it was staying at a friends house close by but couldn't stay at your home, would you offer money to your friend for helping to look after it, and would you think it's a bit slack to take it back after 18 months when that family hasn't had any contact with the dog and it has become such a part of your family?

The beautiful dog went back to its family today and my friend is devastated so are her kids, they just feel like the family didn't care about him, and if she hadn't sent a message to say they were moving house the other family would never have even tried to take him back.

I think your friend shouldn’t have offered to foster the dog if she couldn’t handle giving it back. I also think the dogs owners are assholes and got 18 months of free boarding. No one is in the right in this situation. Everyone is wrong.

I would of just took the dog with me and nkt tell them anything they clearly forgot about the dog and if I’m feeding it sheltering and taking care of it .. if they went past the date we all agreed on then that dog is mine 
But if a situation happened that I needed someone to care for my dog I would give them money out of my paycheck every week like a daycare for expenses

I would never expect someone to board my dog for free and never as long as 18 months. That’s their dog now if I had to do that. Especially if their kids bonded with my dog for that long. I would have asked after like 3 months if they wanted to keep him or her since I obviously can’t get my life together. The dog is the important thing here and doesn’t deserve to be moved around like that after settling in for so long with a new family.

Their words and actions don’t match. They gave that dog away.
I’ve had people care for my cat, while I’ve been on holiday. Each time, I’ve left them with more than enough cat food, treats, spot on, toys, plus whatever else.
What turdish behaviour, it’s not their dog anymore.

She should send them an invoice to recoup any costs. She clearly has proof that she fostered this dog for 18 months so I doubt they’ll have a leg to stand on unless they have a copy of a signed contract that outlined the terms of the fostering.

I would give them money to look after my dog if I had intentions of getting it back. It seems wrong to dump your dog on someone and offer nothing or have no contact, and then suddenly want the dog back just because the family is moving. Seems like that person didn’t care much for their dog. Also if you give your dog to someone for such a long time, I feel like you should just let them keep it.

your friend shouldnt have offerred to tale care of the dog without any compensation. the original family is not wrong to take their dog back. its not her dog. she accepted the terms of her taking care of the dog.

If you can't take care of the dog you lose the dog. No judgment because it totally happens but you give the dog up. If someone is watching your dog for you, you pay for every little thing and if you're that close you walk it. That's just common decency.
