Does anyone know anything about premature fledglings?

You are not supposed to move fledglings unless you see they have been abandoned or are in danger. I have raised a nestling before and then released. My boyfriend found a premature fledgling and picked it up. He moved it to the grass but ended up taking it home because he knows I have cared for them before. It shouldn’t be out of its nest yet, so it fell, because it’s beak is too big still. It also had gravel and sand in its eye. There was a lot of nests around and didn’t want to put it in the wrong one as well as there being hawks, owls, bobcats, coyotes, and other animals in the area that could eat it. We didn’t want to leave it on the ground.

Now I have to take care of it until release. Does anyone want to give me tips? It’s close to flying but just not there yet. Last time I fed wet puppy food and when it got older I introduced mealworms. Is there anything I should different?
