Does securing a diaper properly help to prevent accidents from going up your baby's backside?

THERESE

I have my LO Conor stay with my MIL sometimes. A good 80% of the time, I pick up Conor and he has had an accident across his back. It sucks that I have to always use pre-laundry stain remover to get out the dried poop from his clothes because my MIL just leaves it aside for me. I check how she secures Conor's diapers. I notice that the backside of the diaper, the flap is not pulled up. Instead, it's just left scrunched up. When she was confronted about this, she denies that it happens because of the way she puts on his diapers. She only watches him for a couple hours but somehow manages to have accidents. I'm a FTM and during my care, I probably get only 1 accident out of the whole week, And that's if it's a lot. I just need to know if I'm right or not about having the diaper secured properly to help prevent accidents. I'm not saying it is guaranteed but simply less accidents.
