Autism or normal?

Recently we found out my 8 year old brother has autism. All the signs were there we just never thought twice about it, anyways I have a one year old daughter and I know a symptom is them flapping their hands and I’ve been noticing my daughter doing that, she only does it when she wants something or when she wants me to pick her up. Can this be a sign? Or it’s normal?

I am a behavioral therapist, so I work with autistic children all day. Honestly this could be either. It could be an attention seeking behavior or it could be a stimming behavior. The only way to know for sure is to have her evaluated. Her pediatrician might have to refer her to a specialist, but usually won't unless they see a cause for concern.

The autism spectrum is so wide. To be honest the symptoms your brother has, might not be the same for another. My sister has autism amongst many other difficulties. I don't think you should be worried about your child flapping her hands, a lot of children do this. Being so young though, I don't think anyone would give a diagnosis. If you are worried though, go and talk to someone about it.

My 14mth old son flaps his hands when he wants something or is throwing a tantrum. It’s also how he waves. We call it his lazy wave. In all other ways he is normal and so I’m not worried 
From the research I’ve done identifying it is more of looking for an absence of behaviours than a presence of them. But if you’re concerned do some more research and speak to a professional to get her evaluated
