Could praying to the Saints & Mary possibly be considered a form of idolatry? Please explain.

Yes. The bible clearly teaches us how to pray (Matthew 6:9-13) and in the model prayer it starts with 'our father' which means we must pray directly to God. The only mediator we must direct our prayer through is Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5)
This doesn't leave room for anyone else.
And this would do better in one of the Christian groups.

No, it's called an intercession. You ask Mary or a saint to help your pray and sort of speak on your behalf, but you are still praying to God.

It's a misconception people have. When we pray to saints, they are usually the patron saint of something. Saint Anthony for am example. Patron saint of lost things. We "pray to him", to have him ask God to help us a little more. We aren't worshipping them. Difference of religion, I guess

Is asking your friends to pray for you idolatry? Praying to the saints/mother Mary is similar. You are asking for their prayers.
For example, the hail Mary prayer says "Holy Mary mother of God, pray for us sinners"

This is one of the basis of the split between orthodoxy and Catholicism during the great schism.
Orthodox will not pray to saints for that reason but Catholics will.
I also think it’s odd that in tbe Orthodox Church you won’t find statues because of false idols but we have very ornate painted glass?

When Jesus died on the cross, the veil ripped in the temple which meant we no longer have to go to the priest or the temple to sacrifice animals to clear our debt of sin with God. We can pray to him directly. We do not have to ask the Mary and saints or ancestors to intercede for us! Where does it say in the Word that we have to pray through Mary or the ancestors? Go strictly by the Word of God ask yourself how is this Biblical? 
There are other cults that practice witchcraft who pray through the saints. Stick with the Word of God says not traditions.

Kathleen Madigan, my favorite comedienne is a Catholic. She has a bit in her last special about the difference between Catholics and Christians. She finds it funny after 18 years of Catholic school that you can go directly to Jesus. She goes on to joke that in school she was given a list of people she could talk to but she was wasn’t to bother Jesus. You can talk to your guardian angel, the saint in charge of the problem you’re facing. You can talk to Jesus’ mother. But you’re not to bother Jesus.
