Why bother? If they were so great, you'd still be together. Why pollute the great new thing you can have by holding on to the past?

I think it depends a lot on the maturity of both and how things ended, I do believe it's not common, but it is possible.

I think it depends. My fiancé is still friends with one of his exes and she’s even coming to our baby shower next month. I think it depends on the situation and everyone’s maturity levels

I guess it’s possible but to me if you don’t have kids why bother? I never had a desire to look at my ex’s again never mind stay friends.

I definitely think it’s possible as long as everyone involved is mature and respectful. I have an ex who I consider a friend, but we didn’t become friends again until a few years after we had broken up. So we were both completely moved on.

I would like to think so. I have with a few people but we became friends after a while.
Give it some time before you try and become friends.  I think that person was important to you so just because you aren't together doesn't mean you should lose a good friends. 
 
My ex boyfriend wouldn't let me be friends with any of my ex's even tho I was really good friends with them.
So I feel like it also depends on how your SO feels about it.

Yes. If all parties are mature enough to handle it. I dated my Bestfriend years ago. We broke up when he moved to a diff state but kept in touch bc we’d been friends for 6 years. We’re now 10 years in and still close. My SO loves him. Anytime him and his wife visit we all hang out. It’s possible if it’s strictly a friendship
