Diaper rash cream?

Ok, maybe this is a stupid question, but my son has his first diaper rash and we are both miserable.  The tip of his penis is red and he shrieked when I was washing it.  Was I supposed to put diaper cream on his penis?  I thought it just went on the butt.  But I don’t understand what I did wrong.

The pediatrician emailed me back and said to use Aquaphor or other Vaseline based cream on his penis and zinc oxide on his bum.
It looks like this was most likely caused by an attempt to change formulas that went very badly.

Yes I have done that with Aquaphor. (I have 3 boys.) We had a horrible case of diaper rash around 7 weeks with this LO and I think the cause was wipes. My pediatrician said that many kids under 4 months have a reaction to them. So we swapped to just using a wash cloth with water when Home and water wipes when out and things improved!

I think it would be fine to go on his penis as well, especially if it is rashy there, don’t blame yourself sometimes there were can be acidic. If it doesn’t go away with the cream get it checked to make sure it isnt something else. X
