Ignoring the breakup?

Has anyone ever had an issue with breaking up with someone, where they’re just belligerently in denial about it? I’m in that situation. It’s always “I love you anyway” and “I’m going to carry this torch forever” and we live nearby, have friends in common, he’s friends with my partner of 8 years who I live with. It didn’t work out and now my involvement with this guy seems inescapable. I feel like it’s tainting is, and I’m scared for him we’re soul mates but he thinks I’m THE ONE, the onlyyyy one. He’s 26 and I’m the only relationship he has ever known... the only one he will even pursue.. Any helpful advice out there?

My ex was that way. He was on the edge of stalking, it was creepy... I started by telling him that it was over, and there was no changing my mind. And when he still didn't listen, I blocked his number, so he couldn't call. Told friends that I couldn't hang out if he was around, and that they couldn't talk about me to him or in front of him.  After about a year, he seemed to get the picture. At this point he had gone as far as changing his image and making himself look more like the man  I was with...  He did call my work a few times after the first year, to the point my boss had him trespased from the premises.  I just need to be clear with him, then distance yourself as much as possible.
