When did everyone start potty training?

My son is 16 months old. I started just putting him on the big boy toilet every 20 minutes. He’s been doing really great, but I don’t think he understands quite. what’s going on. He’ll sit on the toilet no issue, and won’t move for 20 minutes. But when I let him get up, and congratulate him for peeing he just looks at me like “huh?” Im not sure if I should continue or not :/

The thing with starting early is that physically children aren’t ready. They physically aren’t able to recognize the urge to go and physically aren’t able to control it even if they sort of understand the idea. If you are willing to have accidents and put your toddler on the potty every 20 mins and all that then go for it but more often than not the process will take a long time, be unsuccessful or be really stressful for you and baby.  When my almost 19 month old wants to sit on the potty great. When he is saying he needs to poop before he does I ask if he wants to do it on the potty and if he says yes then ok. But I’m not putting any sort of pressure on it.

My twins are 17 months and I haven't pushed it too much. Right now I'm just talking to them about it... when I change the I say "you went pee pee/poo" when I notice they are pushing I ask them "going to the bathroom?" they come into the bathroom with Mr and I tell the "Mommy's going pee"
When I give them a bath my husband brings them up while I run water and I sit them on their chair while I finish getting it ready. I tell them it's the potty and thety play with the button sound. When they had enough they stand up, they haven't used it yet. My MIL bugs me to start actively trying but they just haven't shown any signs of being ready.

My daughter was nearly 2 and a half. So glad we waited until then as she was really ready and such an easy process. 2 weeks and she was accident free without needing to be reminded (apart from the occasional ‘I’m too busy to go to the toilet’ little accident about once every couple of weeks). 
I have friends who’ve tried too early and it took months for their kids to get it. 
She showed signs earlier than that (wanting to watch me go, and telling me when she’s done a poo or a wee), and her vocab was really good, but yeah, glad we waited.

Rule of thumb is if the child doesn’t understand what potty training is then they aren’t ready. I learned that in school which I am going to school to be an early childhood educator

Waited til they showed interest. I chose not to stress or fight them. I introduced the potty, got the books taught them the concept just after they turned 2 but they weren't totally ready til about 3 and then it was easy peasy, no fighting, no messy accidents and no set backs 😊
