Cancelled job interview?!
Sorry for the long post!
I recently graduated and was able to have a phone interview for a job that would start up my career. I was doing fine during the interview until they asked me about how much of a salary am I looking to receive. At the moment I gave an estimate on what I was told was a decent starting salary for my career. The next day, I was given a in-person interview in two weeks
After the phone interview, I discussed it with friends who’ve live in that area and most of them said if I wasn’t going to receive benefits then I wasn’t going to survive in that area because of how pricey it would be.
This bugged me a lot and I remembered the interviewer telling me I could send her any questions I had before the interview. So I wrote up an email with my questions including the benefits and how that would impact my salary and asked if a higher salary would be more appropriate and was open to discuss it since I wasn’t committed to that salary amount.
I immediately got a response back from the interviewer canceling our upcoming interview because “I wouldn’t work out for their company”. Then gave me the salary amount I had said initially during the phone interview, was what I should have stayed with. They didn’t even answer any of my other questions.
Initially, I thought my email was general questions about the position but I’m sure the interviewer took it differently. Was I wrong to ask the salary question? Was it appropriate for her to cancel the interview just for asking a question?
Overall, I’m a little disheartened but I know I will find something soon to start up my career. But this whole situation bummed me out about my career path.
