I worked as a vet tech for years. You should be able to see a definite waist line and should be able to see ribs in some breeds- danes, whippet, greyhound. You should only have to barely touch in on dog to feel ribs for judging weight.

With my Great Dane they told me to be able to see the outline but not obvious rib showing is normal with the breed. Some breeds its not a bad thing. My dad has an American Bulldog mix and his ribs show ever so slightly no matter how we try to fatten him up and the vet says its fine his metabolism is high but he is totally healthy. Some breeds its not abnormal so no need for people to be judgey.
