Is there a difference between a vacation and travelling?

Question

So my boyfriend and his family say they are completely different words and can’t ever be used interchangeably. They are strict about this and get mad when I say they are the same. 
But I was raised using them interchangeably....
so I’m wondering if I’m the only one who says they are the same

(p.s. my whole extended family says they are the same)

You can be on vacation and not go anywhere. You can travel and not be on vacation. They aren’t the same.

They are different. 
If I traveled I went to another city, state of county. 
If i’m on vacation, I have days off from work but not necessarily going anywhere.

Traveling is the physical activity of going from one place to another. You are "traveling" to the grocery store when you drive there but you aren't vacationing there. You don't have to travel to go on Vacation either. I often times use them as the same word as well... but technically they are very different. More importantly...if your SOs parents give that much of a shit about your word choice...you need to be giving them some more words if you catch my drift.

i think vacation means more going to a nice place to relax or staying in one general city or area. travelling would mean going around different areas or like across a country. i guess you can travel to go on vacation though idk. its the way you use the words
