why is sex that important

I have been seeing a man over 3 yrs. we have had many up and downs. our last down was a big one and he tried to widdle himself back to me by just I am sorry, I messed up. I this time have not jumped, ran back and forgave him. And this he does not like. His perception of a relationship is always sex, kissing, telling me he wants me (and not in a individual way either) it's sex. I have been trying to change my life, better my relationship with myself, church and daughter. And it's sad all he thinks about is sex. I just don't know if him and I are on the same path anymore. The belittling is getting out of hand, and the anger behind it is scarey. just need opinions
