PSA: Domestic Violence
Anyone a fan of true crime here? I listen to podcasts while at work, currently listening to an old episode of Sword and Scale, in which a woman was killed by her husband during a bitter divorce. Something about this episode really struck a chord with me, since I’ve learned a lot about abuse and domestic violence from my psychology degree, as well as hear a lot of stories on here about abusive relationships. So I wanted to share this with everyone who may not know...or who may need some help.
For everyone that says, “oh why didn’t she just leave that abusive relationship sooner?” Or “Why did she let him do that to her? I would be out the door as soon as it happened the first time”
The MOST dangerous time for women in abusive relationships is when they actually LEAVE. I hate when people say things like, oh she should have left sooner, and basically blame the victim for keeping herself in that situation... One thing I didn’t know, is that period of danger is a lot longer than I realized.
“Once someone makes the decision to terminate a relationship, that woman then faces a TWO YEAR window of when her life is in danger more than any other time in her life. Statistically, that two year window is when women die.” -Diane Fanning
Stay safe, be vigilant, and call someone if you need help in a domestic violence situation, call the police to escort you when you leave and cut off alll ties if you can afterwards.
