When you say “I only wash my hair once a week”, does that mean you only shampoo it once a week, or only get it wet once a week?

I’m so confused!! I always see girls talking about how they wash their hair once weekly, but their hair looks clean! And not “I have a pound of dry shampoo in my hair” clean, but actually clean! Does ‘not washing’ your hair mean you can still run it under the water when you shower but not apply shampoo to it? Please explain. I have no sisters nor female cousins so sometimes my beauty knowledge is extremely limited, lol.

Many hair types are different, but I know for African American women it is recommended to wash our hair twice or three times monthly. All I do is use shampoo and conditioner for those two or three times. When I am only showering, I run water through my hair without shampoo or conditioner.

I wash my hair maybe three times a week, sometimes twice a week depending on my plans. I take a shower everyday, but only body showers. I don’t wet my hair in between washes or it gets gross without using shampoo. By the third day of not washing my hair, I’ll use some dry shampoo.

I wash my hair twice a week, I do NOT wet it down between or it’s NASTY!! You need to work up to whatever you decide to do. Not just quit cold turkey. Just start going an extra day after you wash each time. And once your hair normalizes go another extra day. Personally I do twice a week because I’m a naturally oily person so once a week is too long, but I get the most compliments on my hair when it’s FILTHY. 
I’m a hairstylist and I’m constantly begging my clients to wash less. The few who do take my advice always say they wish they had trusted me sooner. 
Switching to a sulfate free shampoo and letting your scalp normalize before you start skipping days is best. I can’t go 4 days between washes with regular shampoo but can easily go that long or longer with sulfate free. 
Also you just have to get over the way your hair feels. It looks awesome when it’s dirty wish dry shampoo so just don’t worry about running your fingers through it. That’s how girls get all that awesome texture or what I call “sex hair.”

Wow, thank you all so much for the answers and advice! If I ever do decide to switch to “body showers” as many of you do, I will be sure to avoid wetting my hair at all during those. I do already use a sulfate and paraben-free shampoo, so that’s good!

personally, i only wet my hair when i wash it and only wash twice a week. its not worth getting it wet and brushing it out and drying it for no reason. its too much work and i dont even have curly hair. its just long and thin. it also reduces how much hair i lose.
